NATURE OF WORK
You will conduct and analyze standard hematological, virological, immunological, serological, microbiological, and chemical tests such as histology, tissue trimming, and parasitology. You will test tissue, blood, and fluid samples of domestic and wild animals to detect the presence or absence of disease; carry out dissections and collect tissues under the direction of qualified personnel; perform general laboratory maintenance, calibrate testing equipment, and be responsible for the proper disposal of biohazardous waste. You will also communicate with clients, coworkers, and the general public on matters such as sample status and test results and log samples and other information into a computerized tracking system used to record custody trail and identify work order status. You will be supervised by a microbiologist or other qualified professional.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed. Your test results will count only if you meet all the job requirements. If after reading the requirements you are not sure you qualify, contact one of the Commission's offices listed at the end of this announcement.
For some jobs, offers of employment will be made only if you are willing to travel. Travel expenses will be paid.
You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.
Minimum Requirements
Associate degree in Veterinary Laboratory Technology (VLT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) and one year of technical laboratory experience in a biomedical research or development, clinical pathology or diagnostic laboratory; OR
Two years of college which includes six credits in biology, three credits in chemistry, and three credits in microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, histology or biostatistics and one year of technical laboratory experience in a biomedical research or development, clinical pathology or diagnostic laboratory; OR
An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of technical laboratory experience in a biomedical research or development, clinical pathology or diagnostic laboratory, and six college credits in biology, three college credits in chemistry, and three college credits in microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, histology or biostatistics.
If you do not have an associate degree in Veterinary Laboratory Technology, Veterinary Medical Technology, or Medical Laboratory Technology, you must submit a college transcript or list detailing your completed courses in the specific physical and biological sciences listed above.

TESTING
The test will be administered on a computer. Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office.
You will have a maximum of 2 1/2 hours to complete the test which will cover the following subject areas:

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.
The test will also be held approximately 10 days a month at additional test centers located in Allentown, Erie, Johnstown, Lock Haven, and Scranton. If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test. You must submit a new application to be retested.
TEST RESULTS
Employment and promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
