NATURE OF WORK

 

You will conduct and analyze standard hematological, virological, immunological, serological, microbiological, and chemical tests such as histology, tissue trimming, and parasitology for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.  You will test tissue, blood, and fluid samples of domestic and wild animals to detect the presence or absence of disease; carry out dissections and collect tissues under the direction of qualified personnel; perform general laboratory maintenance, calibrate testing equipment, and be responsible for the proper disposal of biohazardous waste.  You will also communicate with clients, coworkers, and the general public on matters such as sample status and test results and log samples and other information into a computerized tracking system used to record custody trail and identify work order status.  You will be supervised by a microbiologist or other qualified professional.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed.  Your test results will count only if you meet all the job requirements. 

 

For some jobs, offers of employment will be made only if you are willing to travel.  Travel expenses will be paid.

Minimum Requirements

Associate degree in Veterinary Laboratory Technology (VLT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) and one year of technical laboratory experience in a biomedical research or development, clinical pathology or diagnostic laboratory; OR

 

Two years of college which includes six credits in biology, three credits in chemistry, and three credits in microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, histology or biostatistics and one year of technical laboratory experience in a biomedical research or development, clinical pathology or diagnostic laboratory; OR

 

An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of technical laboratory experience in a biomedical research or development, clinical pathology or diagnostic laboratory, and six college credits in biology, three college credits in chemistry, and three college credits in microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, histology or biostatistics.

TESTING

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.

If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test.  You must submit a new application to be retested.

 

If your name is on an eligible list for this job title and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
