NATURE OF WORK

 

This is professional educational work providing academic and vocational counseling to inmates at a State Correctional Institution.  You will conduct personal interviews and diagnostic examinations to evaluate newly-admitted inmates for placement in suitable educational programs.  Placement is based on the inmate’s academic achievement, personal interests, experience, aptitude, length of sentence, and potential for future employment.  Work includes maintaining records of inmate progress, and preparing reports for inmate classification, parole, and employment reference purposes.  All positions are within the Department of Corrections.

 

Work is performed under the general direction of a school principal or administrator and is reviewed through conferences and evaluations of results.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.

 

You must pass a background investigation.  After you receive a conditional offer of employment you must undergo a medical examination.

 

After being hired, you must attend and complete a 3-week basic training program at the Department of Corrections' Central Training Academy in Elizabethtown, PA, which is located in Lancaster County.

 

If you are currently an employee of the Department of Corrections, you need not repeat training you have already successfully completed.

 

Some positions require possession of a valid PA certificate as a Secondary School Counselor.  If hired for one of these positions, you will be required to maintain your professional certification.

 

Minimum Requirements

Two years of professional experience in educational guidance and counseling and a bachelor’s degree in the social sciences, behavioral sciences, education, social work or counseling; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training

 

Clarification of Requirements

You may substitute related education for the required experience or appropriate experience for the required education.  Unrelated experience or education will not be accepted.

You must provide complete and accurate information.  Failure to do so may delay the processing of your application, or result in a lower-than-deserved score or disqualification.

 

If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your “Application.”  A new application and application supplement are required for a retest.

 

If your name is on an eligible list for this job title and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
