NATURE OF WORK

You will manage and direct a social services program for the aging in a local Area Agency on Aging (AAA).  Work includes planning, developing and implementing a comprehensive annual plan and budget to achieve the program goals and objectives.  Duties also involve the planning, identifying of needs and associated costs, and obtaining contractual agreements to provide the required services to clients served.  You are required to monitor and evaluate the quality of services provided by contracts, or AAA staff providing services to the clients.

Employees at all three levels perform the same duties, although the size and complexity of the program services increase with each level.

Please make sure you meet all requirements. If after reading the requirements you are not sure you qualify, contact one of the Commission's offices listed at the end of this announcement.

For the most recent information on job opportunities contact the Area Agency on Aging where you are interested in working (See your local telephone directory for addresses and telephone numbers); OR Department of Aging, Human Resource Division, 555 Walnut Street, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania 17101-1919; telephone (717) 783-3126.

TESTING

This will be an oral/work simulation test.  This test will measure job requirements that are needed for effective job performance in all managerial positions.  The factors you will be rated on are: decision making, problem analysis, communicating (to exchange information), delegating, managing conflict, and arranging and conducting meetings.

You will first have a one-hour study period to review the "in-basket" of a manager in a fictitious agency.  During the hour you are to assume the role of the manager, identify problems in the situation presented, and determine what you would do in response to the in-basket items.  The in-basket items are not specific to an Area Agency on Aging.  You will then spend 45 minutes with an oral examination rating board.  You will describe your responses to the in-basket to the board. The board members will be experienced managers.

You will also receive information prior to your scheduled test describing this process.

If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 12 months from the date of your test, if the test is open for application.  You must submit a new application to be retested.

If your name is on an eligible list for these jobs and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.

TEST RESULTS

State and County employment and promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
