As Assistant Director of Laboratories, Health, and functioning as the director in the director’s absence, you will plan, organize and develop strategies for the expansion of laboratory capacity of the Department of Health, Bureau of Laboratories; lead the development of research teams; study laboratory design and operations issues for their applicability to the Bureau of Laboratories, Health; develop strategies for laboratory research; and provide expert counsel to the medical and laboratory community.  You will also coordinate the Bureau of Laboratories’ bioterrorism response with other state and federal agencies; investigate the Bureau operations and data management systems; train staff; direct safety programs; and supervise subordinate managers.




You must be willing to travel.  Travel expenses will be paid.


You must be able to perform the essential functions of the job.  Pennsylvania residency is currently waived for this job title.


Minimum Requirements

Five years of professional experience in a medical or public health laboratory, involving laboratory analysis, applied investigational and developmental research; development and implementation of laboratory standards for methodology or regulation of licensed clinical laboratories, including three years in a supervisory capacity.


Condition of Employment

To be hired by the PA Department of Health, you must meet the qualifications under the provisions of the federal Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) 88 and the Pennsylvania Clinical Laboratory Acts.  The federal CLIA requirements, in Section 493.1405, can be found at under Regulations.  The state requirements are at  These requirements are outlined on Application Supplement 2011-030-1. 


If you do not meet at least one of the options listed below, you may not be eligible for this job title.


1.  Are you a doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy (MD or DO) licensed to practice medicine or osteopathy in Pennsylvania; and are you certified in anatomic or clinical pathology, or both, by the American Board of Pathology or the American Osteopathic Board of Pathology or do you possess equivalent qualifications to those requirements for certification?


2.  Are you a doctor of medicine, doctor of osteopathy or doctor of podiatric medicine licensed to practice medicine in Pennsylvania; and have one year of laboratory training obtained during medical residency (i.e., physicians certified either in hematology and medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine)?


3.  Are you a doctor of medicine, doctor of osteopathy or doctor of podiatric medicine licensed to practice medicine in Pennsylvania, and have 2 years of experience directing or supervising highly complex laboratory testing?


4.  Do you hold an earned doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution (an acceptable doctoral degree is a Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Science, Doctor of Dental Surgery, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, and Doctor of Public Health), and are you certified and do you continue to be certified by a board approved by Human Health Services?
