NATURE OF WORK

 

You will attend structured classroom training to learn the rules, regulations, policies, terminology, and procedures used to develop and adjudicate claims for disability benefits under the Social Security Act.  After you complete this training, you will be transferred to a work unit and assigned a caseload of claims for disability benefits.  You will review disability claims; obtain medical, educational, and vocational evidence; analyze and evaluate medical reports, test results, vocational and educational histories; and recommend final disposition of the claims.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed.  Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements.  If after reading the requirements you are not sure you qualify, contact one of the Commissionís offices listed at the end of this announcement for guidance.

Minimum Requirements

A bachelorís degree.

 

Clarification of Requirements

You may take the test if you have completed 90 or more credit hours and expect to receive a bachelor's degree before the start of your employment. 

 

Conditions of Employment

You will face a challenging and complex training program and probationary period while learning the laws, regulations, procedures, and skills associated with Social Security disability claims adjudication. This program includes classroom training and testing, as well as on-the-job training. The standards for these jobs are high and demanding.

2.    Be subjected to and meet high performance standards prescribed by the Federal Social Security Administration.

3.    Communicate with claimants by telephone and mail to provide effective customer service.

4.    Attend and successfully complete 10 to 12 weeks of intensive and complex classroom training.

5.    Interact with professionals such as physicians, hospital personnel, and Federal Social Security Administration staff.

6.    Handle stress created by fluctuating work demands.

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industryís Bureau of Disability Determination has branch offices in Greensburg (Westmoreland County), Harrisburg (Dauphin County), and Wilkes-Barre (Luzerne County).† Each branch office employs approximately 140 Disability Claims Adjudicators.† Formal training classes are scheduled at the branch offices when several positions become vacant or if new positions are established due to increased claims.

 

Lists created by this test will be used to fill future vacancies as they occur due to retirements, promotions, transfers, resignations and so forth.

TESTING

 

The test will be administered on a computer.  Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office. 

 

You will have a maximum of 3 hours to complete the test which will cover the following subject areas:

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.
