NATURE OF WORK

 

You will train inmates in a State Correctional Institution or facility in the trade indicated by the job title.  You will provide on-the-job instruction in trade methods, care and use of tools, and safety practices, and will be responsible for inmate care, custody, and control during training and as the inmates carry out work assignments.  You will also perform skilled maintenance, repair, and construction duties to maintain operations of the institution, and may lead inmates in this work.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed.  Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements.

 

You are subject to Pennsylvania residency requirements and must be able to perform the essential functions of the job.  Visit the Commission’s website, Job Seekers page, for PA Residency Information.

 

You must pass a background investigation.  After you receive a conditional offer of employment you must undergo a medical examination.

 

After being hired, you must attend and complete a three week basic training program at the Department of Corrections' Central Training Academy in Elizabethtown, PA, which is located in Lancaster County.

 

Minimum Requirements

 

Corrections Electronics Trade Instructor - Three years of experience testing and repairing electronic equipment.  Full time training in electronics, electricity, or a closely related field may be substituted for up to two years of this experience; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

All Other Job Titles - Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the trade for which you apply; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the trade for which you apply.

 

Clarification of Requirements

 

All Job Titles Except Corrections Electronics Trade Instructor - “An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the trade for which you apply” means you can qualify if you have experience and training equal to the number of years required to complete an apprenticeship in the particular trade (usually three or four years), plus one year of skilled journey level work experience in the tradeBe sure to give complete details on your application about the work you have done or training you have had, even if you must attach additional sheets.

TESTING

 

The test will be administered on a computer.  Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office. 

 

You will have a maximum of 3 hours to complete the test.  The number of questions you will answer will depend on the number of job titles for which you apply.

 

All candidates will answer the first 60 questions, which include 15 questions in each of the following subject areas:

 

Fractions and Whole Number Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division

Interpreting Graphs and Technical Drawings

General Safety Procedures in the Trades

Training Others in Trades Practices

 

In addition, candidates who apply for Automotive Mechanic, Carpenter, Welding, Plumbing, Machinist, Painting, Refrigeration Mechanic, Electrical, and Electronics Trade Instructors will answer 30 questions on the tools and practices appropriate to the trade(s) for which they apply.

 

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.

If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test.  You must submit a new application to be retested.

 

If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.

 

TEST RESULTS

 

Employment and promotion lists will be established.  You will be notified in writing of your test results.
