NATURE OF WORK

 

Museum Educator 1 – You will present museum programs as classroom instruction, lectures, tours, digital audio-visual displays, planetarium programs, traveling exhibits, and other public programs and events based on museum and historic site collections and activities.  You will establish class and program schedules; prepare lesson plans, scripts, or other forms of presentation; and conduct research to collect information about museum collections, exhibits, or activities. 

 

Museum Educator 2 – You will perform the same professional work as a Museum Educator 1 with minimal supervision, as well as establish and maintain contacts with and coordinate activity schedules for schools, local historical societies, and promotional or other groups and individuals concerned with museum and historic site educational and interpretive programs.  You will train volunteers and part-time employees engaged in museum educational and interpretive activities.  You may administer computer systems related to educational programming and visitor services.

You must be willing to travel.  Travel expenses will be paid.

 

You must be able to perform the essential functions of the job.  Pennsylvania residency is currently waived for these job titles.

 

Minimum Requirements

 

Museum Educator 1 - One year of experience in museum related educational and interpretive work, and a bachelor's degree.  Graduate study which included or was supplemented by museum studies courses recognized by the American Association of Museums or a museum internship may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

Museum Educator 2 - One year as a Museum Educator 1; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Positions are with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) located in the State Museum in Harrisburg (Dauphin County), and statewide at various historic sites and museums in Beaver, Bucks, Centre, Dauphin, Erie, Lancaster, Luzerne, Somerset, and Venango Counties.  The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission anticipates filling two Museum Educator 1 vacancies in Dauphin and Erie counties, and four Museum Educator 2 vacancies in Bucks, Dauphin, Lancaster, and Venango counties.

TEST RESULTS

 

Employment and promotion lists will be established.  You will be notified in writing of your test results.
