NATURE OF WORK

 

You will provide on-the-job training to lower-level officers and trainees.  You will supervise inmates to maintain security, ensure adherence to institutional rules, and facilitate proper adjustment and participation in correctional processes.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed.  Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements.

You must be a current employee of the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.  You must have regular or probationary Civil Service status and currently be working in a classification with a lower pay range than the one for which you are applying.

 

Minimum Requirements

 

You must fulfill the following experience requirements by May 01, 2014:

 

One year of experience as a Corrections Officer 1 in Pennsylvania state employment; OR one year of experience as a Forensic Security Employee 1 in Pennsylvania state employment; OR two years of experience in corrections security work in a Pennsylvania state or county correctional institution.

 

When completing the application, list your full-time Corrections Officer 1 or Forensic Security Employee 1 time in the first experience block.  List any paid out-of-class time in the second experience block.  Be sure to include the job title in which you were paid out-of-class and the total out-of-class hours for which you were paid.  Please obtain documentation of paid out-of-class work from the Human Resources Office at your institution and submit it to the State Civil Service Commission.  The State Civil Service Commission’s contact information is provided under the “How To Apply” section.  Failure to do so may result in disqualification.

TESTING

 

The test will be administered on a computer.  Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office. 

 

You will have a maximum of 2 1/2 hours to complete the test.  You will be presented with work related situations occurring in a fictitious correctional institution.  You will be required to select one or more actions in the role of a Corrections Officer 2 to handle the situations appropriately.  You will also be required to answer questions related to effective working relationships; report writing; and rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

 

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices.  It also will be held at additional test centers located Erie, Johnstown, Lock Haven, and Scranton.  The test will be given

April 24 – 26 and April 28 – 30.

 

You must schedule your test date, time and location on the State Civil Service Commission’s website.  You must print this information for your records.  A copy should be given to your institution’s Human Resources Office; include your name, social security number, rank and color group.  You must select a test session which does not conflict with your scheduled work hours.

 

If this announcement does not produce enough names for a specific area, another test may be announced for that area only.

 

 

TEST RESULTS

 

A promotion list will be established.  You will be notified in writing of your test results.

 

This list will replace any previous list.

 

This test and scoring procedure are different from previous tests for this job title.  If you have taken the test before, you may receive a different score on the test.
