NATURE OF WORK

 

Automotive Mechanics and Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanics maintain, repair, overhaul and inspect automobiles, trucks, tractors, graders, air compressors, etc.  You will troubleshoot, test, install, adjust, assemble, replace and repair various components of the equipment.  You may function as lead workers over helpers or semi-skilled workers.

 

Automotive Equipment Foremen supervise equipment operators, mechanics and other garage personnel in the maintenance, repair and dispatch of automotive and maintenance equipment, and the upkeep of the building facilities used for equipment storage and maintenance.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed.  Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements.

Conditions of Employment for Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic

Certain positions require possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s license and any endorsements necessary to operate specific vehicles or equipment.

 

Certain positions required a valid Pennsylvania Class 1 Inspection Mechanic Certificate on the first day of employment.

 

Post-Employment Requirements for Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic

All positions require possession of a valid Pennsylvania Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period.

 

Certain positions require the demonstration of the successful operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission.

 

Certain positions require possession of a valid Hazardous Materials Endorsement (H).

 

Certain positions require possession of a valid Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N).

 

Necessary Special Requirements For All Other Titles

For some jobs, hiring agencies may require that persons hired meet additional requirements.  For those specific jobs, offers of employment will be made ONLY to individuals who meet the following additional requirements:

 

Certification as a Pennsylvania Certified Inspection Mechanic (Automotive Mechanic).

 

Possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license of the class appropriate to the vehicle operated and supplemented by the endorsements required by law for operation of specific equipment (Automotive Mechanic).

 

Possession of a CFC-12 Refrigerant Recycling Certificate, a 134A Refrigerant Recycling Certificate, or a Compressed Natural Gas Certificate (Automotive Mechanic).

 

Minimum Requirements

 

Automotive Mechanic – Four years of experience in the automotive mechanic trade; OR completion of an approved apprenticeship; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic – Three years of journey level mechanical experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes 1 year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

Automotive Equipment Foreman – Two years of experience as an Automotive Mechanic Supervisor; OR 2 years of experience as an Automotive Mechanic or Equipment Operator B; OR 4 years of experience in the operation or maintenance of a variety of automotive, groundskeeping or construction equipment; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.
