If hired, you will work full-time in a series of temporary assignments. All jobs are located in the Harrisburg Metropolitan Area (Dauphin County). Most jobs are in state office buildings in the Harrisburg capitol complex.
While working in the Clerical Pool, you will not receive benefits such as medical coverage, paid vacation, sick leave or holidays. However, these jobs could lead to permanent employment with benefits.
In order to be admitted to the test, you must bring two forms of identification; one form must contain a signature and a recent photograph, such as a driver’s license or school or military identification.
You will complete your application in the test room. Testing will only occur in our test room on the 2nd Floor of the Strawberry Square Complex at 320 Market St., Harrisburg on the following date.
Test dates in 2013 are at 8:15 a.m. on Thu. – April 4; Thu. – May 2; and Thu. – June 6.
In order to be considered for hire, you must pass the test and be prepared to stay an additional 45-60 minutes to complete the necessary paperwork. You must bring two forms of identification that indicate your eligibility to work. One form must contain a signature and a recent photograph such as a driver’s license, or school or military identification; and one form must indicate US citizenship or eligibility for hire such as a social security card, birth certificate, US citizenship ID card or US work permit/green card. You must also bring the names, addresses and approximate dates of employment for your two most recent employers and one personal reference. For further information call 717-783-3917.
If you have criminal conviction(s), please bring information regarding the date, location and disposition with you when you report for testing. Criminal convictions are not an automatic bar to employment. The managers of the clerical pool will evaluate each case individually.
The information you provide will be verified. Falsification of information may prevent your hiring or result in dismissal from employment.
NATURE OF WORK
You will perform routine clerk typist work in various state agencies. You will work as a replacement for a full-time employee on extended leave or as an additional worker during peak workload situations. Typical work assignments last 3 to 6 months. As assignments are completed, you will
return to the clerical pool to be referred to new work assignments. Duties may include: entering data and typing various reports, correspondence, etc., using a computer, answering phones, filing, sorting, checking materials, and serving as a receptionist.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.
Minimum Requirements
You must pass the written and typing tests for Limited-Term Clerk Typist.

Opportunities for employment will depend on the number of temporary vacancies and peak workloads experienced by state agencies. Successful employees may be considered for permanent full-time positions. Each year 50% of the temporary workforce obtain permanent full-time state positions. Clerical pool workers have moved into both Civil Service and Non-Civil Service entry-level clerical jobs and other technical and professional positions depending upon their qualifications.
TESTING
The test will consist of a written test weighted 50% and a typing test weighted 50%. Either part of the test may be canceled by the Commission, and the weight added to the remaining part.
You must pass both parts of the test.
The test will be administered on a computer. Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office. You will have a maximum of 2 1/2 hours to complete the test.

Typing Test - The test is given on a personal computer. You do not need any previous computer experience to take the test. There is a 5-minute practice exercise followed by the 5-minute typing test. The passing score is 40 wpm (after deduction for errors). If your score is less than 40 wpm, you may retake the test once on the same day. If you do not want to retake the test immediately or you do not pass the test on the second try, you may return on another regularly scheduled test date to retake the test after 75 days. However, if you return on a later date, you must submit another Civil Service Application. If you do not pass the typing test, you will not be permitted to take the written test for Limited-Term Clerk Typist.
If you fail the written and/or typing test, or want to take it again, you may be retested 75 days after the date of your last test.
If your name is on an eligible list for this job title and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
TEST RESULTS
Employment and Promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
