NATURE OF WORK

All positions are in the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.  As a Bridge and Structural Draftsman-Designer, you will prepare a variety of bridge and related structural plans, maps, and drawings; detail superstructures, abutments, culverts, piers, and other structures; design culverts, concrete slab bridges, single span bridges, retaining walls, and other structures; and assist higher-level staff in designing more complex structures.  You will calculate quantities of required materials and estimate costs; and review plans and drawings completed by others.

As a Senior Bridge and Structural Designer, you will review and/or design complete sets of plans for complex bridge and structural projects, such as multi-span concrete or steel structures where hydraulic, soils, and foundation design considerations vary from standard consideration and structural analysis of loading limits complicate design.  Work may include lead work over lower-level technicians engaged in bridge and structural design, drafting and detailing phases.

As a Bridge and Structural Design Supervisor, you will determine work priorities; assign work to subordinates; monitor and review work; and provide guidance and assistance.  You will develop and/or assist in developing design plans and specifications for all types of bridge construction and rehabilitation/replacement projects.

Employees in these job titles may serve as members/leaders of bridge inspection teams or coordinate bridge inspection/maintenance programs.
