NATURE OF WORK
As a Bridge and Structural Draftsman-Designer, you will prepare a variety of bridge and related structural plans, maps, and drawings; detail superstructures, abutments, culverts, piers, and other structures; design culverts, concrete slab bridges, single span bridges, retaining walls, and other structures; and assist higher-level staff in designing more complex structures. You will calculate quantities of required materials and estimate costs; and review plans and drawings completed by others.
As a Bridge and Structural Designer, you will prepare complete sets of design plans for complex bridge and related structures such as multiple span bridges; and assist higher-level staff in more difficult or unusual circumstances. You will estimate construction working times; prepare special contact provisions; and review design plans, specifications, and computations prepared by others.
As a Senior Bridge and Structural Designer, you will review and/or design complete sets of plans for complex bridge and structural projects, such as multi-span concrete or steel structures where hydraulic, soils, and foundation design considerations vary from standard consideration and structural analysis of loading limits complicate design. Work may include lead work over lower-level technicians engaged in bridge and structural design, drafting and detailing phases.
As a Bridge and Structural Design Supervisor, you will determine work priorities; assign work to subordinates; monitor and review work; and provide guidance and assistance. You will develop and/or assist in developing design plans and specifications for all types of bridge construction and rehabilitation/replacement projects.
Employees in these job titles may serve as members/leaders of bridge inspection teams or coordinate bridge inspection/maintenance programs.

You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.
Conditions of Employment
You must be willing and able to bend, stretch, stoop, and kneel; to climb hills and bridge scaffolding; to walk on rough, sloping or slippery terrain; and to work under adverse weather conditions while making field visits to project sites.
Minimum Requirements
Bridge and Structural Draftsman-Designer – One year as a Bridge and Structural Drafter; OR three years of experience in a variety of drafting assignments, one of which shall have been in bridge and structural drafting, including six months CADD experience or training, and graduation from high school; OR two years of experience in bridge and structural drafting and detailing assignments including six months of CADD experience or training and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, drafting, or design technology; OR an equivalent combination of experience and/or training.
Bridge and Structural Designer – One year as a Bridge and Structural Draftsman-Designer; OR one year of professional experience in bridge and structural design work, including six months involving CADD operation; and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, or a closely related field; OR three years of professional experience in bridge and structural design work, including six months involving CADD operation; and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, drafting, or design technology; OR an equivalent combination of experience and/or training.

TESTING
The test will be administered on a computer. Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office.

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.
The test also will be held approximately 10 days a month at additional test centers located in Allentown, Erie, Johnstown, Lock Haven, and Scranton. If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test. You must submit a new application to be retested.
If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
TEST RESULTS
Employment and promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
