NATURE OF WORK

 

As a UCC Building Inspector 1 and 2, you will inspect industrial, commercial, educational, health care, institutional, and other public and private buildings to determine compliance with building, accessibility, fire safety, energy conservation, and other health and safety laws and regulations.  Work may also include performing inspections for compliance with electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and other codes required under the Uniform Construction Code (UCC).

 

As a UCC Building Inspector Supervisor, you will supervise inspectors, and enforce occupational health, and safety issues in an assigned geographic location, promote occupational safety training programs, review inspection reports, assist with inspections as needed, provide technical assistance to staff, and provide formal training to UCC Building Inspector Trainees.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

You must be willing to travel.  Travel expenses will be paid.

 

You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.

 

Necessary Special Requirements

 

All Job Titles - Valid certification issued by the Department of Labor and Industry, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as an Accessibility Inspector/Plan Examiner.

 

UCC Building Inspector 1 - Also requires at least one of the following valid certifications issued by the Department of Labor and Industry, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania:  Building Inspector, Electrical Inspector, Mechanical Inspector, Plumbing Inspector, or Energy Inspector.

 

UCC Building Inspector 2 and Supervisor - Also requires all of the following valid certifications issued by the Department of Labor and Industry, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania:  Building Inspector, Electrical Inspector, Mechanical Inspector, Plumbing Inspector, and Energy Inspector.

 

Post-Employment Requirement

 

UCC Building Inspector Supervisor Only - Employees must obtain a valid certification issued by the Department of Labor and Industry, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a Building Code Official in the probationary period.

 

Minimum Requirements

 

UCC Building Inspector 1 - Successful completion of the UCC Building Inspector Trainee program; OR two years of experience inspecting commercial, industrial, or other public use buildings for compliance with building and safety codes; OR three years of building construction work which included the performance of skilled trades duties in the electrical, structural, plumbing, or mechanical trades; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

UCC Building Inspector 2 – Three years of experience inspecting commercial, industrial, or public use buildings for compliance with building and safety codes; OR four years of building construction work which included the performance of skilled trades duties in the electrical, structural, plumbing, or mechanical trades; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

UCC Building Inspector Supervisor - One year as a UCC Building Inspector 2; OR four years of experience inspecting commercial, industrial, or other public use buildings for compliance with building and safety codes; OR five years of building construction work which included the performance of skilled trades duties in the electrical, structural, plumbing, or mechanical trades; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

Clarification of Requirements

 

You may substitute related education for the required experience.  Unrelated education will not be accepted.

 

Conditions of Employment

There are 37 filled UCC Building Inspector positions and 5 filled UCC Building Inspector Supervisor positions located throughout the State in the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.  All employees work from home and have work in assigned counties.  The agency anticipates filling approximately 6 UCC Building Inspector positions and 1 UCC Building Inspector Supervisor position in the next 18 months.  The locations of these vacancies have yet to be determined.

TESTING

 

Your application will be evaluated to determine whether you meet the Minimum and Necessary Special Requirements.  If you meet these requirements you will receive a score.  It is important that you provide information showing you possess the required certifications.  List all certifications you possess with the certificate numbers on your application.  Failure to do so may delay the processing of your application, or result in disqualification.

 

If you are found ineligible and subsequently obtain proof of your credentials, you may resubmit an application with the qualifying information at any time.  A new application is required. 

 

If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.

 

TEST RESULTS

 

Employment and promotion lists will be established.  You will be notified in writing of your test results.
