NATURE OF WORK

 

UC Claims Examiner - You will interview claimants for unemployment compensation on non-routine, difficult, and problem cases; contact employers and claimants by telephone or correspondence to obtain needed information; review disputed claims; and render decisions on determinations, adjustments, overpayments, and appeal cases.

 

UC Claims Supervisor - You will supervise office staff engaged in taking, processing, and examining unemployment compensation claims; assign work to staff; review staff workload and make reassignments to ensure adequate service is provided to claimants; interpret and communicate policies and procedures; monitor staff performance for adherence to goals, objectives, and standards ensuring compliance with federal and state laws; and provide technical guidance to staff on unusual or difficult adjustments, determinations, overpayment, and appeal cases.  Work also includes reviewing performance data measures, assisting in the review of service quality evaluations, determining staff training needs, and conducting technical training to orient new employees and enhance skills and proficiency of employees.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Requirements

 

UC Claims Examiner - One year of experience as a UC Claims Intermittent Intake Interviewer or UC Claims Intake Interviewer; OR 3 years of experience in general office work which includes 1 year involved in working with the Unemployment Compensation Claims Law and its application including meeting or interviewing the public; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training which includes 1 year involved in working with the Unemployment Compensation Claims Law and its application including meeting or interviewing the public.

 

UC Claims Supervisor - Five years of technical experience in unemployment compensation claims work including 1 year of monetary and non-monetary claims determinations; OR 1 year of experience in monetary and non-monetary unemployment compensation claims determinations work, and a bachelorís degree; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training that included 1 year of experience in monetary and non-monetary unemployment compensation claims determinations work.

Filled positions for both the UC Claims Examiner and UC Claims Supervisor are located statewide in UC Service or Overflow Centers operated by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.  The centers are located in Harrisburg, Dauphin County; Duquesne, Allegheny County; Altoona, Blair County; Erie, Erie County; Indiana, Indiana County; Scranton, Lackawanna County; Lancaster, Lancaster County; and Allentown, Lehigh County.

 

Typically there are 10 to 20 appointments made per year.

 

Additional opportunities may occur due to normal turnover from retirements, promotions, transfers, resignations and so forth.

TESTING

 

The test will be administered on a computer.  Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office. 

 

You will have a maximum of 2 1/2 hours to complete the test which will cover the following subject areas:

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.

If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test.  You must submit a new application to be retested.

 

If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.

 

TEST RESULTS

 

Employment and promotion lists will be established.  You will be notified in writing of your test results.
