NATURE OF WORK

 

You will supervise Parole Agents, Parole Investigators, and clerical staff in either a district office, sub-office or institutional parole office of the State Probation and Parole system.  Work includes overseeing and assigning work, developing work procedures, and conducting performance evaluations.  Other duties will vary depending on whether you are working in a district office or sub-office, or in an institutional parole office.

 

Institutional Parole Office – You will ensure assignments that affect the release of inmates are completed; review reports on cases; interview inmates, and write parole reports.  You will also prepare parole release forms; conduct parole education classes for offenders and counsel inmates; authorize continued detention of parolees where there are alleged violations, or release documents are not in order; and request parole hearings.  These positions are located within correctional facilities throughout the Commonwealth.

 

District Office or Sub-Office – You will conduct administrative conferences with agents and clients to follow up on client’s problems and ensure violations are not repeated; train new agents; manage the apprehension, arrest and transportation of dangerous offenders; follow up to make certain investigations are being conducted, hearings are being held, and prisoners are transferred.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed.  Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements.

 

You must be willing to travel.  Travel expenses will be paid.

You must pass a background investigation.  In addition, the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole may require a medical examination, urinalysis screening, and a psychological evaluation.

 

Necessary Special Requirement

You must have a valid driver’s license.

 

Minimum Requirements

Three years as a Parole Agent 2; OR 3 years of experience in parole, probation, law enforcement, or social work; and a bachelor’s degree; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

TESTING

 

The test will be administered on a computer.  Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office.

 

You will have a maximum of 3 hours to complete the test.  For this test, you will assume the role of a newly appointed Parole Supervisor.  You will be presented with a number of situations typically encountered on that job that will require you to select one or more appropriate choices to handle these situations.  This exam will assess your knowledge of probation and parole procedures, analytical/problem-solving ability, judgment/decision making, and interpersonal ability.  You will also review and analyze case material for accuracy and compliance with policy.

 

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.
