APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED OR POSTMARKED BY JANUARY 24, 2015, AFTER WHICH THIS ANNOUNCEMENT WILL BE SUSPENDED.

VETERANS:  Pennsylvania law (51 Pa.C.S. §7103) provides employment preference for qualified veterans for appointment to many state and local government jobs.  To learn more about employment preferences and opportunities for veterans, visit the Commission’s website, Job Seekers page, for Veterans; visit one of our offices; or call our veterans information line, (717) 787-6039.

SPECIAL NEEDS:  There is a critical need for hearing individuals (for security purposes) with American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency.  Corrections Counselors with ASL proficiency are needed to communicate program and treatment plans with hearing-impaired inmates.  The specific institutions that have a need for ASL-proficient Corrections Counselors are:  State Correctional Institution (SCI) Camp Hill (Cumberland County); SCI Albion (Erie County); SCI Muncy (Lycoming County); SCI Graterford (Montgomery County).

NATURE OF WORK

You will counsel inmates, help to develop individual inmate program plans, and coordinate inmate treatment programs with other institutional activities.  You will compile inmate background and work histories and develop case records.  In addition, you will participate in parole planning and recommend furloughs, treatment plan changes, and release to community corrections centers.

Most Corrections Counselors work in state correctional facilities, but some are employed in community corrections centers where they counsel inmates to assist them in making the transition from a structured, supervised environment to a less-structured, community-based center.

Counselors at the 2 level work with inmates who may have unusually difficult behavioral and adjustment problems.

You are subject to Pennsylvania residency requirements and must be able to perform the essential functions of the job.  Visit the Commission’s website, Job Seekers page, for PA Residency Information.
