NATURE OF WORK

 

You will participate in structured on-the-job training at a State fish hatchery to develop technical skills in the care and propagation of fish, and in the operation of specialized fish culture equipment.  Your duties will include netting, sorting, and grading fish; taking and fertilizing fish ova; and driving and operating stocking vehicles.  You will also perform semi-skilled work in the maintenance and/or construction of buildings, facilities, or equipment.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

You must be willing to travel.  Travel expenses will be paid.

Conditions of Employment

Employees frequently perform physical work in all types of weather conditions from subzero temperatures to heat in excess of 90 degrees.  Employees must also be willing to work rotating weekends.  If you are unwilling to work under these conditions, do not apply.

 

Necessary Special Requirements

You must have a valid driverís license.

 

In addition, you must obtain a Commercial Driverís License that permits the operation of vehicles of 26,000 lbs. or more prior to completing your probationary period.

There are currently 12 Fish Culturist 1 positions at the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission State fish hatcheries in the following counties:  Bedford, Centre, Clinton, Crawford, Cumberland, Erie, Potter and Wayne.  The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission expects to fill approximately 3 salaried Fish Culturist 1 positions and 6 seasonal positions in Bedford, Centre, Crawford and Erie Counties.

 

Additional opportunities for employment or promotion may occur due to normal turnover from retirements, promotions, transfers, resignations and so forth.

TESTING

 

The test will be administered on a computer.  Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office. 

 

You will have a maximum of 2 1/2 hours to complete the test which will cover the following subject areas:

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.
