NATURE OF WORK

 

You will perform specialized work in the industrial, manufacturing, or occupational field indicated by the job title.  You will work under unique and potentially dangerous conditions; come in close contact with inmate workers; and be responsible for the care, custody and control of inmates in the work area.  The inmate workers are volunteers and will receive training from you to develop occupational skills.

 

Foremen train inmates in the methods and techniques involved in production operations and the operation, maintenance, and repair of production machinery and tools; maintain production schedules; supervise production; inspect for quality and adherence to standards; and keep attendance records.

 

Supervisors plan, coordinate and supervise lower level employees and inmates in manufacturing and processing; establish production standards; supervise production; analyze and maintain records; compile reports; prepare performance evaluation reports; interpret rules, regulations, policies, standards, and objectives; approve leave, schedule personnel, and authorize overtime; and receive grievances and complaints, conduct initial investigations and resolve complaints or recommend resolutions.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed.  Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements.

You must pass a background investigation.  After you receive a conditional offer of employment, you must undergo a medical examination and a urinalysis screening for drugs.

 

After being hired you must attend a basic training program at the Department of Corrections Training Academy in Elizabethtown, Lancaster County.  Foremen must complete a 4 week training program, and Supervisors must complete a 3 week program.

 

Minimum Requirements

 

Foreman Job Titles (98200 through 98345) - Three years of the experience listed below; OR 3 years of experience as a Corrections Officer, including 1 year of the experience listed below; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

Corrections Wood Furniture Factory Foreman 1 - Experience in varied machine or production

 

operations used in the manufacturing of wood furniture.

Corrections Mattress Factory Foreman 1 - Experience in varied machine or production

 

operations in the manufacturing of mattresses.

Corrections Soap and Detergent Factory Foreman 1 - Experience in varied machine or

 

production operations in the manufacturing of soap and detergent.

TESTING

 

The test will be administered on a computer.  Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office.

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.

If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test.  You must submit a new application to be retested.

 

If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
