NATURE OF WORK
You will participate in classroom and on-the-job training programs designed to develop competencies and skill in the operation of wastewater (sewage) treatment plants. Trainees work under the direction of a licensed operator and assist with maintenance, inspection and general operation of the treatment plant. These positions are located at State Parks and Public Welfare facilities throughout the state.
Successful completion of the training program requires passing the certification exam within the probationary period for the class and type of treatment system used at your facility. If you obtain the appropriate license, you will be promoted to Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator with an increase in salary.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed. Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements. If after reading the requirements you are not sure you qualify, contact one of the Commission's offices listed at the end of this announcement.
You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.
Necessary Special Requirement
You must have a valid Pennsylvania driver's license.
Minimum Requirements
Six months experience in building maintenance or trades work.
Clarification of Requirements
There is no substitution for the six months required experience.
Post Employment Requirement
Employees must obtain a valid wastewater operator’s certificate, or an Operator in Training designation, for the class and type of plant operated, as issued by the Pennsylvania State Board for Certification of Water and Wastewater System Operators.

TESTING
The written, multiple choice test will be administered on a computer OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office. Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us.
You will have a maximum of 2 1/2 hours to complete the test which will cover the following subject areas:

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.
The test also will be held approximately 10 days a month at additional test centers located in Allentown, Erie, Johnstown, Lock Haven, and Scranton. If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test. You must submit a new application to be retested.
TEST RESULTS
Employment lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
