NATURE OF WORK

 

You will conduct inspections of bituminous underground coal mines to enforce and promote compliance with mining laws.  You will measure the velocity and oxygen content of the air and test for presence of noxious and explosive gases; explain unsafe conditions to mine owners and mine officials; and order required corrective action.  You may be required to investigate mining accidents and prepare reports of inspections and investigations.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed.  Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements.  If after reading the requirements you are not sure you qualify, contact one of the Commission's offices listed at the end of this announcement.

 

You must be willing to travel.  Travel expenses will be paid.

 

You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.

 

Condition of Employment

You must be at least 30 years of age.

 

Necessary Special Requirements

You must have a valid Pennsylvania driver's license.

 

You must possess a current and valid certificate as a bituminous mine foreman, assistant mine foreman or mine examiner issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

 

Minimum Requirements

Ten years of experience in underground bituminous coal mines, and graduation from high school or certification of equivalent training.

TESTING

 

The test will consist of two parts.

 

Part 1 is based on bituminous underground mining laws.  It will be to your advantage to study the Safety Laws of Pennsylvania for Underground Bituminous Coal Mines Act 55, SB 949 Session of 2008.  A copy may be obtained by contacting the Bureau of Mine Safety at (724) 439-7469; by accessing the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection website www.depweb.state.pa.us; or by using the following direct link http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt?open=514&objID=589139&mode=2

 

The test will be administered on a computer.  Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office. 

 

When taking the test on a computer you must pass Part 1 in order to move onto Part 2*.  You must pass both parts and meet the previously listed requirements to receive a final score.

 

You will have a maximum of 3 hours to complete the test.

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.

If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 3 months from the date of your test.  You must submit a new application to be retested.

 

If your name is on an eligible list for this job title and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.

 

TEST RESULTS

 

Employment and promotion lists will be established.  You will be notified in writing of your test results.

 

This test and scoring procedure are different from previous tests for this job title.  If you have taken the test before, you may get a different score on this test.
