VETERANS: Pennsylvania law (51 Pa.C.S. §7103) provides employment preference for qualified veterans for appointment to many state and local government jobs. To learn more about employment preferences and opportunities for veterans, visit the Commission’s website www.scsc.state.pa.us; visit one of our offices; or call our veterans information line, (717) 787-6039.
NATURE OF WORK
Park Manager Trainee - You will participate in on-the-job and formal training programs designed to instruct you on how to direct the operation, maintenance, and recreational activities of a state park. Initially, you will work with experienced Park Managers. Assignments are detailed and are reviewed while in progress and upon completion. As you demonstrate proficiency, assignments will increase in scope, variety, and complexity; instructions and the review of the work decrease. Work is characterized by constant public contact to exchange information and to obtain compliance with park rules and regulations. After successful completion of 1 year as a Park Manager Trainee, you will be promoted to a Park Manager 1.
Park Manager 1 - You will direct the activities of a small state park, including the administration, operation and maintenance of the physical plant, visitor services and safety, and environmental education. You will be in constant public contact to exchange information and to obtain compliance with park rules and regulations. Work is assigned in the form of desired goals and objectives and is reviewed upon completion by a professional superior for attainment of goals and objectives, completeness, and quality.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed. Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements. If after reading the requirements you are not sure you qualify, contact one of the Commission's offices listed at the end of this announcement.
You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.
Conditions of Employment
You must be willing to reside on state park grounds when housing is available; to work weekends and holidays; to be “on call” during off-duty hours; and to wear a prescribed uniform.
Necessary Special Requirement
You must have a valid Pennsylvania driver's license.
Minimum Requirements
Park Manager Trainee - A bachelor's degree in parks and recreation, forestry, engineering, related natural sciences, or landscape architecture; OR an associate’s degree in parks and recreation, forestry, engineering, related natural sciences, or landscape architecture; and 2 years of experience in the administration services, operational services, administration of the maintenance of the physical plant operations, visitor services and safety program, or environmental education services in a park or an outdoor recreational program.
Park Manager 1 - Successful completion of the training program for the Park Manager Trainee; OR a bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation, forestry, engineering, related natural sciences, or landscape architecture, and 1 year of experience in managing an officially recognized state park or national recreation site.
Clarification of Requirements
Park Manager Trainee - Under the bachelor’s degree option above, you may take the test if you have completed 90 or more credit hours and expect to receive a bachelor’s degree within the next 7 months. You must provide proof of your degree before you start work.
Under the associate’s degree option above, you may take the test if you have completed 45 or more credit hours and expect to receive an associate’s degree within the next 7 months and you have the required experience. You must provide proof of your degree before you start work.
