When completing your application, please make sure you apply for all job titles for which you want to be tested.  You will NOT be permitted to add job titles after you test.

APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

VETERANS:  Pennsylvania law (51 Pa.C.S. §7103) provides employment preference for qualified veterans for appointment to many state and local government jobs.  To learn more about employment preferences and opportunities for veterans, visit the Commission’s website www.scsc.state.pa.us; visit one of our offices; or call our veterans information line, (717) 787-6039.

NATURE OF WORK

You will manage the maintenance, repair and dispatch of heavy trucks and highway construction/maintenance equipment.  Most managers work in county maintenance organizations of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.  Duties include planning and directing a program of preventive maintenance, repair and inspection; assigning drivers/operators and scheduling the use of heavy equipment; and maintaining buildings and grounds used for equipment maintenance and storage.  The difference between job titles is based on the size and complexity of the county maintenance organization.  Supervision is exercised over a staff of subordinate supervisors, mechanics, equipment operators, and garage support personnel.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Please make sure you meet all requirements.  If after reading the requirements you are not sure you qualify, contact one of the Commission's offices listed at the end of this announcement.

You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.

Conditions of Employment

Highway Equipment Managers sometimes work under unique and demanding conditions.  You must be willing to work irregular hours, work overtime, work up to a 12 hour shift during snow emergencies, be subject to recall around the clock, travel extensively within the home county or district, and possibly spend 10–50% of your time in overnight travel, depending on the specific position.

Travel expenses will be paid.  Most employees are assigned a state-owned vehicle with a two-way radio.

Minimum Requirements

Highway Equipment Manager 1 - Two years of experience in the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel engines and other components of heavy highway maintenance and construction vehicles and equipment to include 1 year of such experience in a supervisory or administrative capacity; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Highway Equipment Manager 2 - One year of experience as a Highway Equipment Manager 1; OR 3 years of experience in the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel engines and other components of heavy highway maintenance and construction vehicles and equipment to include 2 years of such experience in a supervisory or administrative capacity; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Clarification of Requirements

"Other components" means systems such as the drivetrain, brakes, cooling system, electrical system, steering/control, suspension, etc.  "Heavy" equipment includes trucks or other maintenance or construction equipment over 27,000 GVW.

The equivalency statement under "Minimum Requirements" means that related advanced education may be substituted for part of the experience requirement.  There is no substitution for the required supervisory or administrative experience.  Unrelated experience or education will not be accepted.
