NATURE OF WORK
You will perform technical inspection work in the enforcement of state underground mine laws in anthracite underground mines and have the discretionary authority to order the withdrawal of mine employees if there is the threat of imminent physical danger and close mines until conditions are corrected. You will promote compliance with safety laws and regulations and provide technical advice in a variety of safety matters. This work involves an element of physical danger when inspecting mines or directing mine rescue operations. You will also perform readings of dangerous gases, check ventilation and measure velocity of air in mines, as well as, prepare reports and recommendations to correct or prevent unsound mining practices.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed. Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements. If after reading the requirements you are not sure you qualify, contact one of the Commission's offices listed at the end of this announcement.
You must be willing to travel. Travel expenses will be paid.
You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.
Necessary Special Requirement
You must have a valid Pennsylvania driver's license.
Minimum Requirements
Ten years of experience in underground anthracite coal mines, with five years immediately preceding the examination being in the underground anthracite coal mines of Pennsylvania; and graduation from high school or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Candidates must have practical experience with explosive gas or other dangerous gases found in coal mines.
NOTE:
The phrase in the “Minimum Requirements” which states "...immediately preceding the examination..." will be interpreted to mean up to 24 months preceding the examination. Thus, 5 years of experience in Pennsylvania anthracite coal mines occurring anytime within the 7 year period preceding the examination will be acceptable as meeting this requirement.
Clarification of Requirements
You may substitute related education for the non-Pennsylvania mining required experience or appropriate experience for the required education. Unrelated experience or education will not be accepted.

There are currently five filled positions located in Pennsylvania’s anthracite coal areas in Columbia, Dauphin, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Northumberland, Schuylkill, and Sullivan counties.

The test will be held in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Civil Service Commission Offices, Monday through Friday.
The test will also be held approximately 10 days a month at additional test centers located in Allentown, Erie, Johnstown, Lock Haven, and Scranton. If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test. You must submit a new application to be retested.
If your name is on an eligible list for this job and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
TEST RESULTS
Employment and promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
