NATURE OF WORK

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators perform skilled work in the operation of a sewage treatment plant which includes operating and maintaining motors, pumps, chemical feeders, chlorinators, flow recorders and related equipment used in sewage treatment.  You will follow established procedures and guidelines which may include lead work and training of lower-level employees.  Chief Operators perform the duties listed above at more complex/larger treatment plants.  Supervisors will supervise Operators at more complex/larger treatment plants.

You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.

Conditions of Employment – All Classes

Certain positions require possession of a valid certification issued by the Pennsylvania State Board for Certification of Water and Wastewater System Operators as a wastewater treatment plant operator that is equal to the highest applicable class and type of wastewater treatment plant to be operated.

Certain positions require possession of a valid certification issued by the Pennsylvania State Board for Certification of Water and Wastewater System Operators as a water treatment plant operator for the class and type of water treatment plant to be operated.

Certain positions require possession of a valid pesticide application certification issued by the PA Department of Agriculture for category 24, Swimming Pools.

Necessary Special Requirements- All Classes

You must have a valid driver’s license.

Minimum Requirements

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator - Completion of the training program for Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Trainee and successful completion of the certification process for wastewater treatment plant operator at any class and type; OR possession of a valid certification issued by the Pennsylvania State Board for Certification of Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators as a wastewater treatment plant operator at any class and type.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Chief Operator, Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor - One year of experience as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator; OR one year of experience in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant.

These jobs are located in State Parks operated by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and in State Hospitals and Centers operated by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare.

Normally 1-2 hires are made annually for Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator, 1 for Wastewater Treatment Plant Chief Operator, and 1 every 2-3 years for Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor.

TESTING

You will be evaluated for possession of the appropriate certification as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator based on the information reported on your application for employment.  If you qualify you will be placed on the appropriate eligible list.

YOU MUST INDICATE THE SPECIFIC TYPE AND CLASS OF CERTIFICATION YOU POSSESS AS A WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR IN THE “LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES” SECTION OF YOUR APPLICATION FOR EMPLOYMENT/PROMOTION.

If you apply and are ruled ineligible, you may reapply upon receipt of the appropriate certification as a Water Treatment Plant Operator.  You must submit a new application to reapply.

TEST RESULTS

Employment and promotion lists will be established.  You will be notified in writing of your test results.
