NATURE OF WORK
As a Food Sanitarian you will interpret and enforce Commonwealth laws, rules and regulations related to food and food establishments. Work involves inspecting food, food establishments, camps, and seasonal farm labor camps for proper food preparation, safe handling practices, vector control and cleanliness; collecting samples for analysis; investigating and resolving complaints involving food sanitation conditions; providing advice to food establishment operators, architects and contractors regarding design for new or renovated establishments; and training industry personnel in proper food handling techniques, proper processing procedures, etc.
As a Regional Food Safety Supervisor you will administer the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture food inspection program in an assigned region of the state. Work involves coordinating the inspection of food establishments (e.g., restaurants, food warehouses, canneries, food processors, retail food stores, etc.); overseeing the inspection of seasonal farm labor camps; investigating consumer complaints; developing and conducting food sanitation and safety training; coordinating the Department’s response to emergency situations affecting food safety such as floods, fires, food truck accidents, etc.; and supervising Food Sanitarians assigned to the region.
As a Food Sanitarian Program Specialist you will plan, develop, implement and evaluate statewide Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture food safety programs which apply to inspection of food manufacturing and processing plants, restaurants, retail food establishments, seasonal farm labor camps, organic foods, maple syrup, and shellfish. Work involves developing rules, regulations, policies and procedures for these programs; reviewing and recommending proposed changes; and developing and conducting training courses on food safety for field personnel, governmental officials, and the general public.
JOB REQUIREMENTS

You must be willing to travel. Travel expenses will be paid.
You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.
Necessary Special Requirement
You must have a valid driver’s license.
Minimum Requirements
Food Sanitarian – A bachelor’s degree in food technology, food science, or a closely related field such as chemistry, biology or microbiology and two years experience in the inspection of food and/or food establishments. Appropriate graduate level training may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of one year; OR an associate’s degree in one of the above fields and four years of experience in the inspection of food and/or food establishments; or two years of military food inspection experience and four years of experience in the inspection of food and/or food establishments; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Regional Food Safety Supervisor – Two years of experience as a Food Sanitarian; OR a bachelor’s degree in food technology, food science, or in a closely related field such as chemistry, biology or microbiology, and three years of experience in the regulatory inspection of food and/or food establishments. Appropriate graduate level training may be substituted for the required experience on a year-to-year basis up to a maximum of one year; OR an associate’s degree in food technology, food science, or in a closely related field such as chemistry, biology, or microbiology, and five years of experience in the regulatory inspection of food and/or food establishments; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Clarification of Requirements
You may substitute related education for the required experience or appropriate experience for the required education. Unrelated experience or education will not be accepted.

Food Sanitarian positions are located throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Regional Food Safety Supervisors are responsible for specific regional territories. Positions are in regions throughout the state with headquarters in Altoona (Blair County), Creamery (Montgomery County), Gibsonia (Allegheny County), Harrisburg (Dauphin County), Meadville (Crawford County), Montoursville (Lycoming County), and Tunkhannock (Wyoming County) and Food Sanitarian Program Specialist positions are located in Dauphin County and Lycoming County.
Lists created by these tests will be used to fill future vacancies as they occur due to retirements, promotions, transfers, resignations and so forth.

TESTING
The test will be administered on a computer. Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office.
You will have a maximum of 2 1/2 hours to complete the test which will cover the following subject areas:

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.
The test also will be held approximately 10 days a month at additional test centers located in Allentown, Erie, Johnstown, Lock Haven, and Scranton. If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test. You must submit a new application to be retested.
If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
TEST RESULTS
Employment and promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
