NATURE OF WORK

 

You will interview individuals, their families or legal guardians, and others, to obtain and update information regarding the individual’s physical, mental, emotional, and social functioning.  You will discuss the development and implementation of individual care and treatment plans with interdisciplinary staff.  You will be involved in documenting each individual’s progress in meeting the social services treatment program plan goals and objectives.

 

Supervisors supervise a professional social services staff and may carry a caseload of clients.

 

Managers direct a comprehensive social work program.

 

Forensic Social Workers 2 and Forensic Social Worker Supervisors work within secure Forensic Psychiatric Units on the grounds of a Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare state mental health hospital.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

For some jobs, offers of employment will be made only if you are willing to travel.  Travel expenses will be paid.

If you are a final candidate for a position covered by the Child Protective Services Law, you will have to provide reports on your background, at your own expense, from such sources as the Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare.  If you are not a Pennsylvania resident, you must also obtain a report of Federal Criminal History Record Information, at your own expense, from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

 

If you are a final candidate for a position covered by the Older Adults Protective Services Act, you will have to obtain a report of criminal record information, at your own expense, from the Pennsylvania State Police, or a statement that the State Police Central Repository contains no information relating to you.  If you have not been a resident of Pennsylvania for two years prior to the date that you received notification that you are a final candidate, you are also required to furnish a report of Federal Criminal History Record Information, at your own expense, from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

 

For positions with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections:  After being hired, you must attend and complete a 3 week basic training program at the Department of Corrections Training Academy in Elizabethtown which is located in Lancaster County.

 

For positions with the Pennsylvania Departments of Military and Veterans Affairs, and Public Welfare: After you receive a conditional offer of employment, you must undergo a medical examination.

 

Conditions of Employment - Social Worker 2 and Social Worker Supervisor (State Government)

Applicants for positions in the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs must possess a valid license as a Licensed Social Worker or Licensed Clinical Social Worker issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors.

 

Minimum Requirements

 

Social Worker 2, Forensic Social Worker 2 (State Government)

Two years of experience as a Social Worker 1 or a Forensic Social Worker 1 (Must have been employed in a commonwealth Social Worker job title on September 8, 2008 with continuous Commonwealth employment); OR 2 years of experience as a Social Worker 1 or a Forensic Social Worker 1 and a bachelor’s degree in social work or social welfare; OR 2 years of professional experience providing direct public or private social work services; and a bachelor’s degree in social work or social welfare; OR a master’s degree in social work or social welfare.

 

Social Worker Supervisor, Forensic Social Worker Supervisor (State Government)

One year of experience as a Social Worker 2 or a Forensic Social Worker 2; and a master’s degree in social work or social welfare; OR 3 years of professional social work experience, including one year in a consultative, administrative, advisory, or lead work capacity; and a master’s degree in social work or social welfare.

 

Social Work Manager (State Government)

One year of experience as a Social Worker Supervisor (Must have been employed in a Commonwealth Social Worker job title on September 8, 2008 with continuous Commonwealth employment); OR 1 year of experience as a Social Worker Supervisor and a master’s degree in social work or social welfare; OR 4 years of professional social work experience, including one year in a supervisory capacity; and a master’s degree in social work or social welfare.

 

County Social Worker 1 (Local Government)

Graduation from an approved graduate school with a master’s degree in social work.

 

County Social Worker 2 (Local Government)

Two years of experience as a County Social Worker 1; OR 2 years of professional social work experience in a public or private social services agency and graduation from an approved graduate school of social work.

 

County Social Work Supervisor (Local Government)

Two years of experience as a County Social Worker 1; OR 2 years of professional social work experience in a public or private social services agency and graduation from an approved graduate school of social work.

State government Social Workers are employed in a variety of locations within the Pennsylvania Departments of Corrections, Labor and Industry, Military and Veterans Affairs, and Public Welfare.  Many of these positions are in state hospitals and state centers operated by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare.

 

Local government Social Workers are employed in counties within County Mental Health/Mental Retardation Offices, Child Welfare Offices, Area Agency on Aging Offices, and Housing Authority Offices.

 

There is a need for bilingual (English and Spanish) Social Workers.  These individuals will be involved in providing services to Spanish-speaking clients.  Individuals possessing bilingual skills are encouraged to apply.

 

Lists created by these tests will be used to fill future vacancies as they occur due to retirements, promotions, transfers, resignations and so forth.

 

Employment preference for local government positions may be given to residents of the county where the job is located.

 

Promotion preference for local government positions may be given to employees who work in the counties where job openings occur.

 

Employment preference will be granted to individuals aged 60 and over for jobs with the Department of Aging and Area Agency on Aging Offices.

TESTING

 

Your application will be evaluated to determine whether you meet the Minimum Requirements for the titles you apply for.  If you meet these requirements, you will receive a score.  You will receive credit if you have licensure as a Licensed Social Worker or Licensed Clinical Social Worker.  You must provide your Licensed Social Worker (LSW) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) license number and expiration date in the “Licenses or Certificates” section of your Application for Employment/Promotion.  Failure to do so may delay the processing of your application, or result in disqualification.

 

If you obtain licensure following your initial application and wish to reapply, you may do so as soon as your license is obtained.  A new application is required.

 

If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.

 

TEST RESULTS

 

Employment and promotion lists will be established.  You will be notified in writing of your test results.
