APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED OR POSTMARKED BY MARCH 29, 2014, AFTER WHICH THIS ANNOUNCEMENT WILL BE SUSPENDED.

When completing your application, please make sure you apply for all job titles for which you want to be tested.  You will NOT be permitted to add job titles after you test.

VETERANS:  Pennsylvania law (51 Pa.C.S. ß7103) provides employment preference for qualified veterans for appointment to many state and local government jobs.  To learn more about employment preferences and opportunities for veterans, visit the Commissionís website www.scsc.state.pa.us; visit one of our offices; or call our veterans information line, (717) 787-6039.

NATURE OF WORK

You will perform skilled technical work in drafting, detailing, and designing highway projects.  You will use Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD), and conventional manual drafting techniques, to produce highway plans needed for construction of new roads or rehabilitation or expansion of existing roads.

Highway Drafters perform entry-level drafting and detailing; Highway Draftsman-Designers perform advanced drafting and basic highway design; Highway Designers and Senior Highway Designers complete more complex design projects.  Highway Design Supervisors complete the most complex projects involving environmental, economic, and right-of-way constraints, and supervise lower-level staff.

Highway Designers, Senior Highway Designers, and Highway Design Supervisors review and prepare contract specifications, cost estimates for projects and proposals, and proposals which lead to contracts.  They also act as consultants working with contractors, local governments, utilities and the public.

Highway Design Managers assess future project sites to assure that proposed projects will be acceptable and to evaluate sites for environmental issues; work with a team consisting of PennDOT employees or certified consultants/contractors to complete the project and monitor projects to ensure they are completed to specification; and manage project budgets and provide justification for any additional funding needed.  Managers also schedule projects.
