NATURE OF WORK

 

You will respond to calls for assistance, document problems, diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware, software, and network problems, install and test network hardware, software, and operating systems, monitor and identify network systems malfunctions, and coordinate, schedule, and/or implement resolutions to hardware and software problems.  You may also set up and install PCs, associated software, and peripheral hardware and be responsible for providing training for users.  Network Specialists 2 work with greater independence and are responsible for larger, more complex computer networks.

 

Network Administrators have managerial/supervisory responsibilities for planning, directing, and scheduling the work of subordinate staff engaged in advanced and technical network functions.  They also perform advanced administrative and consultative work regarding the overall network design, development, expansion, implementation, integration, and operation.

Minimum Requirements

 

Network Specialist 1 - One year as an Information Technology Trainee or Information Technology Technician; OR successful completion of the Information Technology Intern – Bachelor Program; OR 1 year of experience providing information technology support services including hardware and software installation, operation, and maintenance within a network environment, and an associate's degree in any information technology field; OR 3 years of experience providing information technology support services including hardware and software installation, operation, and maintenance within a network environment; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training that includes 1 year of experience providing information technology support services including hardware and software installation, operation, and maintenance within a network environment.

 

Network Specialist 2 - One year of experience as a Network Specialist 1; OR 2 years of information technology experience that includes 1 year of technical experience in network operation or network maintenance, and an associate's degree in any information technology field; OR 4 years of information technology experience that includes 1 year of technical experience in network operation or network maintenance; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training that includes 1 year of technical experience in network operation or network maintenance.

 

Network Administrator 1 - One year as a Network Specialist 2, Telecommunications Specialist 2, Telecommunications Supervisor, or Radio Telecommunications Specialist 2; OR 3 years of information technology experience that includes 2 years of technical experience in network operation or network maintenance, and an associate's degree in any information technology field; OR 5 years of information technology experience that includes 2 years of technical experience in network operation or network maintenance; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training that includes 2 years of technical experience in network operation or network maintenance.

 

Network Administrator 2 - One year of experience as a Network Administrator 1, Telecommunications Administrator, or Radio Telecommunications Supervisor; OR 4 years of information technology experience that includes 3 years of technical experience in network operation or network maintenance involving installing, updating, and maintaining inter-network systems and managing information technology projects, and an associate's degree in any information technology field; OR 6 years of information technology experience that includes 3 years of technical experience in network operation or network maintenance involving installing, updating, and maintaining inter-network systems and managing information technology projects; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training that includes 3 years of technical experience in network operation or network maintenance involving installing, updating, and maintaining inter-network systems and managing information technology projects.

TESTING

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.

If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test.  You must submit a new application to be retested.

 

If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.

TEST RESULTS

 

Employment and promotion lists will be established.  You will be notified in writing of your test results.

 

The lists for Local Government titles will replace any previous lists.

 

For Local Government titles, this test and scoring procedure are different from previous tests for these job titles.  If you have taken the test before, you may receive a different score on this test.
