NATURE OF WORK
Lake Erie Lifeguards perform public safety work at Presque Isle State Park (Erie County) swimming areas along Lake Erie. You will patrol and survey the swimming areas to prevent swimmers from endangering themselves or others; enforce swimming regulations; rescue swimmers in distress; search for drowning victims; and administer first aid to the injured.
Lake Erie Lifeguard Supervisors direct the activities of the Lake Erie Lifeguards; plan, organize, and assign work; arrange for appropriate training; review work performance; and perform lifeguard functions.
Lifeguards perform public safety work at State park swimming areas throughout the Commonwealth. You will patrol and survey the swimming areas to prevent swimmers from endangering themselves or others; enforce park rules and regulations; rescue swimmers in distress; and perform related maintenance and custodial duties.
Lifeguard Supervisors direct the activities of lifeguards at State parks; direct the enforcement of park rules and regulations; arrange work schedules; and perform lifeguard functions.
JOB REQUIREMENTS

You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.
Necessary Special Requirements for all Job Titles
Possession of the valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate; OR a valid YMCA Lifeguard Training Certificate; and possession of a valid American Red Cross Community First Aid and Safety Certificate; OR any combination of valid certificates in standard first aid, and adult, child and infant CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).
Additional Requirements
Lake Erie Lifeguard – Certain positions in this class require possession of a valid driver’s license.
Lake Erie Lifeguard Supervisor – Two seasons of experience as a Lake Erie Lifeguard; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training. You must also possess a valid driver’s license.
Clarification of Requirements for Lake Erie Lifeguard Supervisor
Experience as a lifeguard at an ocean, Lake Erie, or other large lake with conditions similar to Lake Erie over two swimming seasons (two months in each season) will fulfill the experience requirement. Three seasons of experience (two months in each season) as a lifeguard in any other setting is acceptable.
Lifeguard – There are no additional requirements.
Lifeguard Supervisor – Two seasons of experience as a Lifeguard; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Clarification of Requirements
IF YOU ARE INVITED TO AN EMPLOYMENT INTERVIEW, YOU MUST BRING THE REQUIRED LIFEGUARD, FIRST AID AND CPR CERTIFICATES WHICH SHOW EXPIRATION DATES AFTER THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF EMPLOYMENT (TYPICALLY MEMORIAL DAY, WHICH IS THE DATE MOST STATE PARKS ARE SCHEDULED TO OPEN FOR SWIMMING). IF YOU DO NOT HAVE CERTIFICATION OF THE SEASON, BUT WILL RECEIVE THE REQUIRED CERTIFICATES (NEW OR RENEWED) PRIOR TO THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF EMPLOYMENT, YOU MUST PRESENT A STATEMENT FROM THE TRAINING AGENCY TO THIS EFFECT AT THE TIME OF THE INTERVIEW AND MUST SHOW POSSESSION OF THE REQUIRED CERTIFICATES ON OR BEFORE THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF EMPLOYMENT. IF YOU DO NOT FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE, YOU WILL NOT BE HIRED. DO NOT SUBMIT THE REQUIRED CERTIFICATES OR COPIES OF THESE CERTIFICATES WITH YOUR APPLICATION.

Lake Erie Lifeguard and Lake Erie Lifeguard Supervisor positions will be filled at Presque Isle State Park. Those Pennsylvania State Parks with swimming pools will fill Lifeguard and Lifeguard Supervisor positions.
Weather permitting, unless otherwise posted, public swimming facilities are generally open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. (except Presque Isle which opens some beaches 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and others noon to 8 p.m.) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Employees are required to work weekends and any other day of the year, are frequently scheduled to work overtime, and are required to purchase their own swimsuits in a model specified by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
Lists created by these tests will be used to fill future vacancies as they occur due to retirements, promotions, transfers, resignations, and so forth.

TESTING
You will be rated on your experience and training. Your score will be based on information you report on your application and application supplement.
You must provide complete and accurate information. Failure to do so may delay the processing of your application, or result in a lower-than-deserved score or disqualification.
If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your application. A new application and application supplement are required for a retest.
If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
TEST RESULTS
Employment and promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
