NATURE OF WORK

 

You will perform paralegal work in a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Engineering District to support the Attorney General’s Office in the defense of tort claims filed.  Work involves collecting perishable accident data; reviewing pre-litigation claims; researching and reviewing county and district office files, drawings and charts; interviewing county and district personnel; producing required documents; responding to all interrogatories; recommending Department experts for courtroom testimony; providing input in the determination of the extent of liability; and recommending possible appropriate settlement.  Work may require travel within an assigned geographic region and participation in a court of law as a Commonwealth witness.  Work also includes building files regarding accidents that have a potential for future legal actions; investigating construction and vehicle accident sites for contributing factors such as road conditions, sign placement, and weather conditions; photographing accident sites; and reviewing police reports.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed.  Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements.

Minimum Requirements

Two years of paralegal experience and a certificate from an accredited paralegal school; OR five years of progressively responsible investigative legal work in gathering and organizing legal documentation for use in a court of law; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

There are 6 filled Tort Liability Specialist positions.  The actual number of hires and their locations will depend on the needs of the Department.

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.
