NATURE OF WORK

 

Transportation Construction Inspectors test and inspect construction materials and inspect work on roads, bridges or other transportation projects to ensure compliance with established standards and contract specifications for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

 

Transportation Construction Inspector Supervisors plan, organize, assign and review the work of Transportation Construction Inspectors on roads, bridges or other transportation projects; and make on-site technical decisions.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed.  Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements.

 

For some jobs, offers of employment will be made only if you are willing to travel.  Travel expenses will be paid.

Minimum Requirements

Transportation Construction Inspector – One year as an Engineering Technician; OR one year of construction inspection experience and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

Transportation Construction Inspector Supervisor – One year as a Transportation Construction Inspector; OR two years of construction inspection experience and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

Conditions of Employment

Transportation Construction Inspector Supervisor – Certain positions in this job are required to meet the qualifications for a Bridge Inspection Team Leader as defined by the current National Bridge Inspection Standards.

 

Transportation Construction Inspector and Transportation Construction Inspector Supervisor – Certain positions in these jobs require possession of a valid non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C driver’s license or equivalent.

Positions are located in the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District Engineering Offices throughout the Commonwealth.  For a complete listing of offices, refer to the PennDOT website at www.dot.state.pa.us and choose “PennDOT Near You” from the menu.  The “PennDOT Regional Map” will provide information concerning the district offices.

 

The agency usually fills approximately 50 Transportation Construction Inspector positions and 5-10 Transportation Construction Inspector Supervisor positions each year.  Positions may be permanent or seasonal.  The actual number of hires and their locations will depend on the needs of the department.  The construction season runs from March to November.

 

Lists created by these tests will be used to fill future vacancies as they occur due to retirements, promotions, transfers, resignations and so forth.

 

Employment preference will be given to residents of the counties within the Engineering District where the jobs are located.

 

Promotion preference will be given to employees who work in the counties within the Engineering District where job openings occur.

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.
