NATURE OF WORK
You will develop, coordinate, and implement environmental and park education and recreation programs. You will serve as a naturalist, educator, and resource person for educational institutions, government agencies, civic organizations, and the community at large. The majority of positions at this level are seasonal in nature. Some employees work from March through November in a state park setting providing programming for park visitors and school students; others work from September through June in environmental education centers or in a state park.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed. Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements. If after reading the requirements you are not sure you qualify, contact one of the Commission's offices listed at the end of this announcement.
You must be willing to travel. Travel expenses will be paid.
You must be able to work at night, on weekends, and irregular hours and wear a prescribed uniform. You will also be required to attend an Environmental Education, Interpretation and Recreation Workshop in May or June, potentially requiring travel and 5 days/4 nights residence at the site.
You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.
Conditions of Employment
As a condition of employment, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will require you, at the time of hiring, to submit to the Pennsylvania State Police, a request for a Pennsylvania Criminal History Record and to submit to the Department of Public Welfare a request for a Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance Check. You will also be required to agree to release these reports to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources promptly after receiving them. If you provide these reports at the time of hiring, you will not be required to obtain new reports as long as the reports you have provided were issued within the preceding one-year period.
Minimum Requirements
Environmental Education Specialist – A bachelor’s degree in environmental education, education, the natural sciences, social sciences, or parks and recreation; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Clarification of Requirements
You may substitute related education for the required experience or appropriate experience for the required education. Unrelated experience or education will not be accepted.
You may take the test if you have completed 90 or more credit hours and expect to receive a bachelor's degree within the next 7 months. You must provide proof of your degree before you start work.

Positions are located at selected state parks and Environmental Education Centers, Regional Offices, and the Central Office of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Harrisburg, Dauphin County.
The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources typically fills 7 to 10 Environmental Education Specialist seasonal positions, and 1 Environmental Education Specialist full-time position each year.
Additional opportunities may occur due to normal turnover from retirements, promotions, resignations and so forth.

TESTING
The test will be administered on a computer. Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office.

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.
The test also will be held approximately 10 days a month at additional test centers located in Allentown, Erie, Johnstown, Lock Haven, and Scranton. If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test. You must submit a new application to be retested.

Employment and promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
