THE PENNSYLVANIA SYSTEM OF SCHOOL ASSESSMENT

                 1995-96 SCHOOL-BY-SCHOOL RESULTS
                         Released May 1997

In an effort to provide parents, taxpayers and educators with information about
the quality of public schools in Pennsylvania, this publication provides results
of the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) for individual schools
throughout the Commonwealth.

The PSSA is a test administered statewide and provides data in a wide range of
curricular areas to help schools further identify strengths and weaknesses and
foster improvement in academic programs. Fifth, eighth and eleventh grade
students are tested in reading and mathematics in mid February or early March.
The test administered in March 1996 was the second year that all fifth, eighth
and eleventh graders in public schools were required to take the PSSA unless
excused by their parents.

This publication contains results, by school, in reading and mathematics. The
writing results are not included, since all schools did not participate. The
results are listed in alphabetic order by county.

The results are broken down into four groups: High (H), High Middle (HM), Low
Middle (LM) and Low (L). Statewide, 25 percent of the students score in each
group. The numbers for each school represent the percentage for that school in
each of the four groups. In other words, a school with a larger number in the
"H" category had more students who scored in that category than most other
schools in the state.

In some cases, test data are not listed for a school. This occurs when a school
does not have students in the grade(s) tested. For example, an elementary
school that does not have fifth, eighth or eleventh graders would not be
administered the PSSA. In addition, some schools serve special populations,
such as vocational-technical schools and special education centers, and should
not be viewed relative to schools with heterogeneous populations. Further, the
size of the school should also be considered in interpreting the results from
year to year. That is, schools with a lesser number of children will tend to
show more variability in scores from year to year.

Also, in some cases, schools did not have at least an 80 percent participation
rate in one or both subject areas. This 80 percent participation rate is not
meant to be an absolute criteria in terms of understanding participation in the
school's reading and mathematics programs. Rather it is suggested as one
reference to aid in interpreting the representativeness of the sample of
students that were assessed in a particular school. The columns labeled "P"
show an asterisk if there was less than 80 percent participation in that subject
area. If a double asterisk is shown in the "P" column it indicates that 30
percent or less of the students completed the assessment in that subject area.
If there is a double asterisk AND no score is reported, it indicates that the
school has students at that grade level, but none completed the assessment in
that subject area.

In reviewing these data, it is important to remember that many factors, in
addition to those mentioned above, may impact upon a school's scores.
Therefore, judgments about the performance of different schools should not be
limited to the results of one test. These math and reading scores are only two
measures from a very broad set of possible factors that should be considered
when making judgments about a school. To most fully understand these scores and
a school's program, contact the school district of your interest.
