In July of 2008, the Pennsylvania Heritage Society (PHS), in conjunction with Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC), was awarded a State and National Archival Partnership (SNAP) grant by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC). This grant provides an opportunity to share basic archival methods and principles with historical records repositories throughout the state.
These institutions include local historical societies, libraries, museums, academic Statewide Archival Training establishments, civic groups and corporations. Often smaller organizations are faced with substantial problems in maintaining records and lack the necessary resources or training to solve them. These workshops will address these common archival issues and will enable historical records repositories to deal more effectively with providing access to their records while also preserving them for future researchers.
The grant supports three training sessions which will be held in late spring of 2009 at regional locations across the state. The workshops will last two days, consisting of two modules per day. The training will cover archival basics, the PHMC Archives and Records Management Grant Program, records disaster planning and special media/photograph preservation.
