What is text4baby
Text4baby is a mobile service that provides pregnant women and new moms with health information from early pregnancy through their baby's first year of life. Through this educational program of the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition (HMHB), moms can receive text messages on their cell phones at no charge.
Signing up for the service is easy! All you have to do is text BABY to 511411 (for English-language tips) or BEBE (for Spanish-language tips). Text4baby will send three text messages each week to your cell phone with health tips. It's free to sign up and the messages are free. The messages are timed to the women's due date or the baby's date of birth and will continue through the baby’s first birthday.
Topics covered by the messages include - but are not limited to:
- prenatal care
- risks of tobacco use
- seasonal flu prevention and treatment
- mental health issues
- oral health
- immunization schedules
- safe sleep
Text4baby messages will also connect women to prenatal and infant care services and other resources.
Why text messages?
With approximately 90% of Americans possessing a cell phone and texting especially prevalent among women of childbearing age and minority populations (who face higher infant mortality rates), organizers believe that texting will prove to be an effective means of delivering maternal and infant wellness tips.
Sample text message:
Prenatal: "Keep your prenatal appointments. If you miss one, make another right away. Don't wait until next month. They are essential for you and your baby's health".
