Carol Aichele Confirmed as
Secretary of the Commonwealth

Carol Aichele was nominated by Governor Tom Corbett to serve as Secretary of the Commonwealth on January 18, 2011 and was unanimously confirmed by the Senate on April 26, 2011.

In this role, she leads the Pennsylvania Department of State, which protects the public's health, safety and welfare by licensing over 800,000 business, health and real estate professionals; maintains registration and financial information for thousands of charities soliciting contributions from Pennsylvanians; administers Pennsylvania's electoral process; maintains corporate filings; and oversees professional boxing, wrestling and Mixed Martial Arts in the Commonwealth.

Before joining the state, Secretary Aichele served on the Chester County Board of Commissioners, where she was first elected in November 2003 and was re-elected in November 2007.  Under her leadership, the county was awarded three Triple-A bond ratings for its excellent financial management practices.

Regulation Revisions

Effective Dec. 11, 2010, revisions made to the barber regulations were approved as final.  These revisions require that barber schools and barber shops that train barber students keep reports of the hours earned by students and transmit these reports to the board on a quarterly basis.  Revisions were also made to regulations regarding student curriculum.

A letter explaining these changes was mailed to all licensees in January.  View the letter for more information on the regulation revisions.

If you're seeking a baby-faced shorn identity - lather up and do as your granddaddy did.

The old-fashioned barber's shop shave - hot foam applied with a badger hair brush followed up with a stropped and gleaming straight razor - was a male ritual for years. Now the traditional shave, often depicted quaintly in movies and on TV, is getting a closer look from men willing to forgo convenience for quality.

Introducing the Newsletter Preference Center

The Department of State is pleased to introduce the long-awaited newsletter preference center!  At the suggestion of several board members, licensees may now subscribe to multiple newsletters and more easily manage their subscriptions. The newsletter preference center will allow you to subscribe to as many board newsletters as you wish, unsubscribe from any newsletters you no longer wish to receive and update your email address.

The preference center also opens newsletter subscription to non-licensees who may be interested in a particular business or health care field.  We encourage you to share the preference center with your non-licensee colleagues so that they may also receive the benefits of the newsletters’ important updates and timely articles.

It is important to note that updating your email address on My License will not change the email address used for newsletter subscriptions.  You must use the preference center to change the email address at which you wish to receive newsletters, as well as to subscribe or unsubscribe from newsletters.

Visit the preference center now or go the Department of State’s homepage, www.dos.state.pa.us, click on “Licensing,” then “Newsletters.”
