Newspaper Searching Instructions

Searching for Newspapers via the State Library of Pennsylvania online catalog/PILOT

You may access the library's holdings through the online catalog/PILOT from your computer at home or work.

Find Newspapers -

  • Click on State Library Catalog/Pilot link
  • On the next screen, select the middle tab - guided search

After you click on guided search you will get a search screen with three sections.

  • Type in the word “newspapers” in the first space (make sure it is plural).
  • Place your cursor in the second section and type in the name of the city
  • Type the name of the newspaper in the third space
  • Scroll down and click on the search button next to reset.

If you want to search the whole county follow the above directions, except on the second section put in the name of the county (i.e. Lancaster County) be sure to type in the word county and leave the third section blank.

Results -

On the next page that comes up, there will be an area on the left side of page that says Sort Results by , click on the drop down arrow and click on Publish Date.  This will put the page in chronological order from the earliest to the latest dates. Then click on the blue title under Title Long or blue date under Date to display our holdings. Look for the heading that says “Location: Forum Room 102 - Newspaper Microfilm” and scroll down until you see on the left side of the page the heading Library has: and this will tell you the dates we own for that particular newspaper.

Interlibrary loan -

All of our collection that is on microfilm is available through interlibrary loan except for the current two years of the following titles: Allentown Morning Call, Harrisburg Patriot-News, Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News, Pittsburgh Post Gazette, New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post.

Up to five reels can be sent at one time to any requesting library within the contiguous United States. The only information you need to give your library is the name of the city the newspaper is located in, the title of the newspaper and the dates you require. We do not charge for this service, but check with your local library about their interlibrary loan policy.
