What is distance learning?

Distance learning means that you can study with a teacher outside of a classroom in a structured program. You work with a teacher using the Internet, workbooks, and videos to help you reach your educational goals. You will typically not see your distance teacher face-to-face, but you will get support from your teacher by the phone, e-mail, and mail.

Learners can use distance learning to:

  • prepare for the GED® Tests
  • brush-up on reading, writing, and math skills for work, college, or training programs
  • develop employment skills such as finding a job, interviewing, and communication skills

There are many reasons why learners may choose to do distance learning. You can learn using only distance learning or you can also get face-to-face support (classes or tutoring) from your local ABLE agency. Click here to find an ABLE agency in your area.

Distance learning is not always easier or faster than going to classes; however, it can be a convenient way to learn for people who prefer to work this way.

What materials can I use?

Distance learning students can use Internet, print-based materials, and videos to help them reach their educational goals. There is no cost for these materials once a student is enrolled in the distance learning program. You and your teacher will decide which materials will best for you to use.

  • Internet: Your teacher will give you a username and password to access these websites. Once you log in, you will see activities that you will complete online. The websites will save your work and you can review it. Your teacher will also be able to see your work and provide you with feedback.
  • Print-based materials: Your teacher may mail you materials to work on. These lessons will explain concepts to you and give you activities to practice the new ideas you learned.
  • Videos: Specially designed videos introduce new concepts and show how the information you will be learning is used in real-life situations. Videos are used with print-based materials and the Internet.
