Scope of Practice for Expanded Function Dental Assistants

by Christopher P. Grovich, Esquire

On April 29, Governor Rendell signed House Bill 602.  This new law, also known as Act 19 of 2010, made changes to the scope of practice for expanded function dental assistants (EFDA) and provided for the addition of one EFDA and one additional dentist to the Pennsylvania State Board of Dentistry.

Act 19, which becomes effective on June 28, allows EFDAs to perform the following functions under the direct supervision of a dentist:

  • Place and contour amalgam and other restorative materials,
  • Perform coronal polishing,
  • Perform fluoride treatments, including fluoride varnish, and
  • Take impressions of teeth for athletic appliances.

Updated Health and Human Services Resource Guide
Now Available

An updated version of the state’s Health and Human Services Resource Guide is now online at www.health.state.pa.us under the Quick Links tab.

The guide summarizes information about available services and resources for all Pennsylvanians and provides contact information for more than 100 state programs.

“We remain committed to streamlining information about state programs and making our services easy for all residents to access,” said Governor Edward G. Rendell. “We hope this updated all-in-one guide helps Pennsylvanians, in all 67 counties, be healthy and live life to the fullest.”

Residents can find information about available services such as childcare options, immunization programs, medical assistance, obesity prevention and wellness, and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP.

The guide was first released in 2006 and mailed to nearly one million low-income households throughout the state. The updated guide is available online for download.

Pennsylvanians can also find information about the state’s social services at www.COMPASS.state.pa.us or by calling 1-800-692-7462 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday – Friday or 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday.
