What is DGS?

The Department of General Services (DGS) is one of the largest operating agencies in Pennsylvania state government. With approximately 1,266 employees, DGS oversees procurement of goods and services, manages non-highway capital projects and is responsible for numerous core operations of state government, including management of the vehicle fleet, the Capitol Police force, state buildings and facilities. DGS also serves as the state’s real estate agent and insurance broker.

OUR MISSION

It is our mission to provide high quality services at a good price to support the operation of state government. As the state’s purchaser of commodities and services, the manager of capital expenditures for buildings, and the entity that maintains and protects our facilities, it is imperative that we make cost-effective service our primary mission. In addition, we will work to make government more friendly for its users, expand opportunity for minority and women-owned businesses and reduce operating costs for the agencies of state government that we support.

HOW WE OPERATE

DGS is made up of 15 bureaus divided into five major operational groups that are overseen by Deputy Secretaries. In addition, the Press Office, Legislative Liaison’s Office, Chief of Staff, and Office of Chief Counsel report to the Secretary. The Secretary of DGS reports to the Governor.
