Driver and Safety Education…You can make a difference
Parents are very concerned about the safety and well-being of their children at home, school, activities and on the highways. Pennsylvania schools and teachers play a very important role in assisting parents in teaching students what they need to know and be able to do in order to safely grow into inspired, productive, fulfilled lifelong learners.
You will be able to locate Driver Education Content and Performance Expectations, Academic Standards for Health, Safety and Physical Education and web site links where you can learn about free videos, educational materials and grant opportunities. Teachers will find links that can be incorporated into lesson plans and student assignments involving Internet research on safety topics. Parents will find links to parental guides that can direct them as they provide supervised driving experiences with their teens, and students will find links that make learning fun.
School districts may provide a driver education program per Section 1519 of the Public School Code of 1949. The Pennsylvania Department of Education adopted Content and Performance Expectations for Driver Education in the Fall of 2003. The attainment of the expectations will enable students to safely use the Highway Transportation System.
Safety and Injury Prevention Standards were established as part of 22 Pa. Code, Chapter 4, Appendix D (#006-276), Final Form-Annex A, July 18, 2002. The standards describe what Pennsylvania public school students should know and be able to do at the end of the third, sixth, ninth and twelfth grades.
