Back Email Article  Print Article

School Improvement Grants (SIG), authorized under section 1003(g) of Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Schools Act of 1965 (Title I or ESEA), are competitive grants given to Pennsylvania's lowest performing schools to substantially raise the achievement of their students.  A list of eligible schools may be found here in Microsoft Excel format.

Schools are classified as Tier I, Tier II or Tier III

  • Tier I schools are the lowest-achieving 5% of Title I schools in School Improvement.
  • Tier II schools are the lowest-achieving 5% of Title I eligible, but not served, secondary schools with graduation rates below 60%.
  • Tier III schools are Title I schools in School Improvement but not identified as Tier I or Tier II.

Schools receiving SIG funding are required to implement one of four strategies to raise achievement:

  • Turnaround
  • Transformation
  • Restart
  • Closure
