During each two year licensing period, every individual funeral director must complete six hours of continuing education that has been approved by the State Board of Funeral Directors.  A person who does not complete the six hours of continuing education is not permitted to renew a license to practice funeral directing.

The first, easiest and most important way to comply with the continuing education requirements is to take six hours of continuing education courses approved by the Board.  Your professional association may offer such courses.  There are other providers of courses, too.

Another alternative to persons who have a hardship is to submit a request in writing to the Board for a waiver of the continuing education requirements.  Funeral directors who have a serious illness, military service or other demonstrated hardship that prevents them from completing all or part of the required continuing education must submit the request in writing to the Board for approval.  The request must be supported with appropriate documentation and a description of circumstances that are sufficient to show why compliance is impossible.  The Board will notify the funeral director in writing if the request for waiver has been approved or denied.
