The Department of Corrections' Bureau of Correction Education provides educational opportunities for inmates to assist them in becoming responsible and productive citizens in a diverse society.  Academic Education is mandatory for all inmates who do not have a high school diploma or General Education Development.  Inmates must participate in educational programming in order to qualify for jobs within state correctional institutions.  The department offers reading and math instruction, peer tutoring opportunities and English as a Second Language instruction.  Special education programs, taught by Pennsylvania certified instructors, are available to all inmates with assessed special needs.  Instruction is available to assist inmates in improving their core competencies in language arts and mathematic skills prior to enrollment in the General Educational Development program.   A Commonwealth Secondary Diploma program also is provided by certified staff and available to school aged inmates.   The department also provides vocational training leading to trade-based certifications in programs that offer employment opportunities in high demand occupational clusters throughout Pennsylvania.
