Academic Competitiveness and SMART Grants
State initiatives and local school boards and superintendents across the state are to be commended for their efforts to ensure that all of our students complete a rigorous high school curriculum.
Now, the federal government is offering an incentive aligned with this goal – higher education grants.
For students who complete an acceptable rigorous program as agreed upon by the U.S. Department of Education and the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the benefit can be substantial. American Competitiveness grants of $750 are available to first year, Pell Grant-eligible students, and grants up to $1,300 are available for second-year students. National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) grants will provide up to $4,000 annually for Pell Grant eligible students in their third and fourth year of college who major in science, technology, math or critical foreign languages and maintain a 3.0 GPA.
