Nursing Services Consultants - Maternal and Child Health
The Bureau of Family Health funds a Family Health Nursing Services Consultant specializing in Maternal Child Health in each of the six Department of Health’s Community Health Districts. This licensed nurse is responsible for the coordination of Family Health program services, public health education, and outreach activities within the district.
Nursing Consultants identify and investigate health problems within the community and work towards solutions. They inform and educate communities about various public health issues and present health education programs to individuals, families, and groups in the clinic, home, or community setting. The Consultants also provide consultation to staff, health professionals and community partners on public health topics related to family health.
In addition, the Consultants act as a resource to the community. They link individuals to needed services and coordinate follow-up referrals for such services. Nursing Consultants coordinate case investigations related to topics such as Newborn Hearing Screening, Breastfeeding Promotion and Lead. Working with and within communities, the Consultants help identify needs and develop and improve services for children and their families.
The Consultants often represent the Department of Health on district wide and local committees and support the development of public health initiatives related to family health. They participate in coalition and task force development within the community and assure that services for the maternal and child population are included in all community programs.
