The Pennsylvania Department of Health (PADOH) and the Allegheny County Health Department (ACDH) are investigating a measles outbreak in southwestern Pennsylvania. The source of exposure is a traveler from India who arrived in the U.S. on March 7, 2009.

As of April 14, there are six confirmed measles cases related to the outbreak. Highly specialized testing at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) ruled out infection in two of the previously reported cases. Other suspected cases remain under investigation.

State and county investigators and staff from health care facilities have contacted people who may have been exposed to measles to assess each person’s risk. While most of those individuals have been found to be immune to the disease, some potentially susceptible persons have been asked to remain at home until they are cleared of risk.

Investigators believe exposures may have occurred at several sites, including in health care settings.
