The Division of Adult & Postsecondary CTE has been partnering with the Associated Pennsylvania Constructors organization since 2006 to support PA Construction Career Day events across the state. Students, as well as career counselors, can learn both trade and employment opportunities available in Pennsylvania ’s $3 billion annual highway design, construction, and maintenance industry. The construction industry will need an average of 185,000 new workers each year for the next ten years.
During a PA Construction Career Day event, students are able to experience hands-on demonstrations of welding, concrete finishing, carpentry, masonry, power sawing, and even get a chance to sit in and operate actual pieces of construction equipment, such as backhoes, excavators, cranes, and high lifts. The event is for male and female students alike. A growing number of young women are choosing careers in construction and are finding outstanding opportunities for advancement in this industry.
Also present at a PA Construction Career Day event are college and university representatives offering information on degrees in civil engineering, environmental sciences, information technology, geo-technology, and construction management and are available to speak with students about higher education opportunities and training that is aligned with current industry demands.
