Nurse Aide Training Information
Nurse Aide Training Requirements    
  • Candidates are required to be enrolled in a state approved nurse aide training program. Only graduates of a state approved nurse aide training program are eligible to take the state nurse aide examination.
  • A criminal history report free of prohibitive offenses must be obtained within the last year before starting a nurse aide training program. The report can be obtained at http://www.psp.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/psp/4451. If the individual has not been a resident of Pennsylvania for the last two years he or she must obtain a PA State Police Criminal History Report at the Web site above and request information about FBI check via ra-natcep@pa.gov.
  • The candidate must have a physical exam that is dated within one year of the start of the nurse aide training program. This exam must include: (1) evidence that the individual is free of any  communicable  diseases and (2) a negative 2-step Mantoux. If the Mantoux is positive then a negative chest x-ray that is less than five years old is required.
  • The occupational responsibilities of the candidate may involve having full use of their hands, the ability to stand for extensive periods of time, and the ability to perform bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting a minimum of 40 pounds without restrictions.
  • The candidate will need basic math, reading, and writing skills in English.
  • The candidate must be 16 years of age before taking the Pennsylvania Nurse Aide Examination. Some nursing home facilities may require the candidate to be at least 18 years of age.
