Governor Corbett nominates
Carol Aichele as Secretary of the Commonwealth

Governor Tom Corbett has nominated Carol Aichele to serve as Secretary of the Commonwealth.  In this role, she leads the Pennsylvania Department of State, which protects the public's health, safety and welfare by licensing over 800,000 business, health and real estate professionals; maintains registration and financial information for thousands of charities soliciting contributions from Pennsylvanians; administers Pennsylvania's electoral process; maintains corporate filings; and oversees professional boxing, wrestling and Mixed Martial Arts in the Commonwealth.

Before joining the state, Acting Secretary Aichele served on the Chester County Board of Commissioners, where she was first elected in November 2003 and was re-elected in November 2007.  Under her leadership, the County was awarded three Triple-A bond ratings for its excellent financial management practices.

New Legislation Will Impact Physicians and Health Care Employees

Two bills were recently signed into law that will impact health care professionals in a variety of settings.

House Bill 1482, signed into law as Act 110 of 2010 on Nov. 23, 2010, amends the Health Care Facilities Act to require the Department of Health to promulgate regulations requiring employees of health care facilities, health care providers and physicians’ private practices who deliver direct care to consumers to wear photo identification tags when working. 

House Bill 2521, signed into law as Act 121 of 2010 on Nov. 23, 2010, establishes the Anatomic Pathology Service Disclosure Act, which requires physicians or physician group practices that order, but do not supervise or perform, a component of an anatomic pathology service to disclose certain information on the bill for the service which is presented to a patient, insurer or other third-party payor.

Health Licensing Boards Convene for Third Roundtable Meeting

The health licensing board chairs, administrators and division chiefs gathered for their third roundtable discussion in Harrisburg on Jan. 6. 

The roundtable meetings, which had been a regular occurrence in the past, were revived in the summer of 2010.  The first two health board meetings, held in July and October, proved to be very successful in raising issues that affected multiple health-related boards.
