A National Dialogue on Substance Use Disorder Guidelines
Organizations such as the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) are among those leading efforts to develop best practices for handling substance abuse disorders among health professionals.  In order to keep abreast of the latest news in this arena, with NCSBN support, the PA Board of Nursing sent Margaret Sheaffer, a Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs senior prosecutor in charge, to a forum on this topic as it applies to nursing.  What follows is a summary of the forum, held in Chicago in April.

Health Licensing Board Roundtable
Yields Positive Feedback and Results

Acting Secretary Basil L. Merenda and Deputy Commissioner Mark Vessella held the first Health Licensing Board Roundtable discussion meeting in several years on July 15.  The meeting’s 30 attendees included board chairs, administrators and division chiefs.

During the meeting, various administrative issues were discussed and board chairs were given the opportunity to raise issues of concern for their board.

Disaster Preparation: Planning Beats Wishing

Only 34 percent of Pennsylvanians have started preparing for a disaster, although 60 percent recognize that it would be helpful for them to do so. September, which is National Preparedness Month, is the perfect time to start those helpful preparations.
